Healthy Tips for Travellers to the Caribbean
- Gradual exposure to the sun and wearing sunscreen, especially if your skin is fair, will
go a long way to avoiding sunburn and having a comfortable holiday.
- Avoid dehydration by keeping up your fluid intake as the tropics can be hot and humid
(but not too much alcohol, which can worsen dehydration).
- Insects are common in the tropics: remember to use a repellent to protect yourself
against mosquito, sandfly and other biting insects.
- Marine hazards: wear rubber sandals/surf shoes when wading to avoid puncture wounds from
sea eggs or sharp shells etc.
- Avoiding traveller's diarrhea: the safest way is to stick to freshly cooked foods,
peeled fruits, bottled water. If you eat from street vendors, ask to see an up to date
food badge from the Ministry of Health.
- Avoiding sexually transmitted diseases use a condom if you have sex with a non-regular
sex partner.
- Traffic injuries: remember that traffic may be on the other side of the road from what
you are accustomed to, and remember to buckle up your seatbelt if you are driving.
- Personal hygiene is important at home or abroad: always wash your hands after going to
the lavatory and before eating or preparing food.
